Travel Tip #25: Put Your Camera Down

Just because you fancy yourself the next Ansel Adams doesn’t mean you need to burden yourself with every single lens and tripod that you own. Sure, you want to document your travels and preserve your memories. But, by keeping some moments solely in your mind, you’ll actually treasure them more.

So, put your camera down, take a deep breath and just be there. Be in that place. Be in that time. And maybe just wear some pants if you want to cover your legs entirely.

Despite all the photos I’ve taken traveling, most of what I remember does not involve holding a camera. I don’t think taking photos gets in the way of making memories.

Glad to hear it, Gary. I’ve just had a few too many sunsets ruined by the chimes of digital cameras and can’t help but wonder if people would enjoy the scenery more if they weren’t viewing it through a 3″ LCD screen.

  3. Put the camera down?? The hell you say!

Oh, Karen, you can still take pics. Just be sure to enjoy some time with that daughter of yours in between shots!

An additional danger in only viewing things through your lens–if you focus too much on taking pictures you could leave a window of opportunity for a elephant to sneak up from behind and scare the bejesus out of you. True story. But I made a memory, I guess.
