SkyRest Tests

I test the SkyRest Travel Pillow. Because napping’s not just for planes anymore.

SkyRest Convalescing Dog Test

Sure, we know that healthy dogs love the SkyRest Travel Pillow. But what about dogs who are getting over illnesses and injuries? Those are the dogs that are most in need of rest and comfort. Take Heath, for example. He irritated his prepuce and needs to avoid licking the area so that the medications and time can work their magic. He’s been uncomfortable for days in his Elizabethan collar. No dog needs a nap more than Heath.

How’d the SkyRest handle this coned canine? You’d think that collar was a halo the way he slept like an angel.

SkyRest Sauna Test

Unlike other activities, sauna’s are enjoyable wet or dry. But all that heat sure can leave you feeling lightheaded, weak and reading to pass out. Give in to that relaxed feeling (but not the dehydration – that’s dangerous) and take a nap while you sweat out last night’s whiskey, nachos and regret.

How’d the SkyRest handle the heat? Falling asleep was no sweat!

SkyRest Bathtub Test

A long, hot soak after a taxing day can soothe sore muscles and minimize stress levels. But all that steam and hot water can start to make you pretty lethargic. Why not keep your head above water and let Calgon take you away…to dreamland?

How’d the SkyRest handle all that rub-a-dub-dub? I had three dreams in that tub.

SkyRest Office Test

Last modified on 2010-02-02 19:58:07 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

Working in an office is not as glamorous as they make it out to be on Mad Men. There is significantly less smoking, carousing and (permitted) drinking. After a while, moving papers from one side of your desk to the other and scouring conference rooms for leftover sandwiches from catered meetings can leave you bored and famished. That’s when it’s time to shut the door, kick back and sneak in a little office nap.

How did the SkyRest handle the rigors of a workday? I slept like it was my job.

SkyRest Unicorn Test

Last modified on 2010-01-15 20:26:12 GMT. 2 comments. Top.

Most unicorns live in the forest and go on quests. But Björn the Unicorn lives in Manhattan. He’s a womanizer, heavy drinker and gallops at epic speeds. With a booming neigh, he makes his presence known to all who dare approach him. This lifestyle, as you might imagine, can wear out even toughest of mythical creatures.

How’d the SkyRest handle this horny encounter? Björn said it wasn’t as good as this but much better than this.

Watch Björn deliver his official statement on the SkyRest.

SkyRest Conversation Test

Listening to your friends drone on and on about the minutia of their lives can get old fast. Frankly, I don’t always pay attention when other people are talking. So, while your friends babble on about their feelings, why not catch up on some much needed (and, to be honest, more entertaining) sleep?

How’d the SkyRest handle all that jibber jabber? I was too busy talking in my sleep to be bothered.

Special thanks to Rachel Kelly and Fancy Fast Food’s Erik Trinidad for boring me to sleep.

SkyRest Cat Test

Last modified on 2010-01-05 20:19:56 GMT. 5 comments. Top.

Cats love shiny things, being aloof and indignantly watching you scoop up their feces. They don’t do much in the way of physical activity, yet they always seem tired. They’ll sleep on the floor, the windowsill and your face.

So, how’d the SkyRest handle this finicky feline? It’s not shiny, it invaded her space and had nothing to do with her feces. In other words, she hated it. And so did her brother.

This may have been the first negative review for the SkyRest, but take it with a grain of salt. I mean, are you going to believe a couple of cats over one much cooler dog?

Special thanks to Gwen and Peter for tolerating me tormenting them with a pillow that they clearly hated with great feline fervor.

SkyRest Long Island Railroad Test

The LIRR sucks. A lot. Take a nap and pretend that you’re anywhere else. Seriously. It’s that bad.

How’d the SkyRest handle commuter hell? My sleep was heavenly.

SkyRest Shower Test

Last modified on 2009-12-21 16:35:12 GMT. 3 comments. Top.

ShowerTest

Whether you’re groggy when you wake up in the morning or exhausted at the end of the day, standing in the shower can be such a chore. But falling asleep in the shower can result in head injuries, broken teeth and, most worrisome, neck cramps. Best to shower sleep safely.

How’d the SkyRest handle such good hygiene? My dreams weren’t the only things that were wet.

SkyRest Bar Test

SkyRestBarTest

A night of drinking, dancing and carousing will eventually catch up with you. Rather than force more liquor down your gullet, head off tomorrow’s headache by taking a nap before considering that flaming shot.

How’d the SkyRest handle these intoxicating conditions? That sixty-minute nap was a happy hour.

SkyRest Toddler Test

Last modified on 2009-12-14 20:08:51 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

SkyRestToddler

The life of a two-year-old is arduous. People are constantly picking you up, making you say things and denying you the sweet, sweet candy that you crave.  Walking around all day in boots that light up can wear a kid out. Thankfully, no one naps better than toddlers. Napping is so important that it’s scheduled on their calendars (I really hope two-year-olds don’t have calendars).

How’d the SkyRest handle such incredible cuteness? No joke I can make would be better than just staring at that picture.

Special thanks to my niece, Natalie, and her incredibly patient and helpful parents.

SkyRest Wood Chopping Test

Last modified on 2009-12-11 17:56:42 GMT. 2 comments. Top.

AxTestWhitehorse

Chopping woods can be dangerous. You need to focus and pay attention to everything that you’re doing. Swinging an ax when you’re exhausted is not a smart idea. Best to take a nap when you’re drowsy and have one of your friends take over before you get back to work.

How’d the SkyRest handle this dicey situation? It kept me as sharp as an ax!

Special thanks to Eva Holland for her precision ax handling.

SkyRest Piano Test

Last modified on 2009-12-10 03:05:20 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

PianoTest

After the 14th hour of trying to teach yourself how to play “Chopsticks,” your knuckles ache and the skin on your fingertips is raw. The sound of flat notes and sharp tones bounce around your skull like so many ping pong balls in a room filled with mousetraps. Best to give yourself a break and let the music come to you through osmosis.

How’d the SkyRest handle the ebony and ivory? Naps and pianos live together in perfect harmony.

SkyRest Bunk Bed Test

Last modified on 2009-12-09 20:02:37 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

BunkBedTest

Bunk beds aren’t just for kids. Many hostels do brisk business stacking backpackers like flapjacks. But that doesn’t mean that they’re always comfortable. With a little assistance, however, even the low clearance of the bottom bunk can become a sleeper’s paradise.

How’d the SkyRest handle this cramped sleeping situation? Power nap plus bottom bunk equals power bottom!

SkyRest Frozen Pond Test

Last modified on 2009-12-08 19:24:04 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

frozenpondtest

Brutally cold temperatures (think -20C) and long walks can deplete your body’s energy reserves. Bundle up and take a nap on that frozen pond that you’re crossing to recharge your batteries. Just be sure that it’s fully frozen before you walk out there.

How’d the SkyRest handle the Yukon winter? It made sleeping on a pond look (and feel) cool.

SkyRest Dog Sled Test

Last modified on 2009-12-07 18:25:09 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

SkyRestDogsled

Driving a dog sled is taxing. The conditions are unforgiving, the dogs are excitable and steering requires tremendous amounts of focus and effort. Sometimes it’s best to let your friend do the driving while you take a toasty nap in the sled.

How’d the SkyRest handle this canine chaos? I’m thinking of calling it the SledRest from now on.

Sleeping was a breeze thanks to the expert driving of Eva Holland.

SkyRest Subway Test

Last modified on 2009-12-03 18:43:30 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

SkyRestSubway

New York’s subway system may be 100 years old, but it can take you virtually anywhere that you’d ever want or need to go. Rather than sit in traffic, you can catch up on a book, do some work or sleep off that long day you just had. Just be sure to stand clear of the closing door.

How’d the SkyRest handle the stop and go of the F Train? My nap took the express to REM sleep.

SkyRest + 6-Hour Layover = No Problem

Last modified on 2009-12-10 00:46:57 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

YVRTest

Nothing beats a six-hour overnight layover at Vancouver International Airport (where I am writing this). They close the gate areas and the main atrium has very few benches that are conducive to sleep. Thankfully, a partially inflated SkyRest Pillow makes any bench a bed. Three hours and some Tim Horton’s later, I’m ready to attack the day (good lord, where have you been all my life, Timbits).

I’m heading north to Whitehorse with the SkyRest in tow. Rest assured the Great White North will be featured prominently in future SkyRest Tests.

SkyRest Park Bench Test

Last modified on 2009-12-03 13:32:34 GMT. 3 comments. Top.

SkyRestBench

Walking around New York City is taxing. Your feet hurt, your back aches and your thighs chafe. Park benches offer an oasis of relaxation in an otherwise tumultuous urban center. You can catch up on the news, call a friend or, yes, even fall fast asleep.

How’d the SkyRest handle the unforgiving support of a bench? It made it feel like a day in the park!

Hey, is that Erik Trinidad of Fancy Fast Food making a phone call?

SkyRest Mariachi Test

Last modified on 2009-12-02 21:42:44 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

MariachiSkyRest

Sleeping through a performance by a mariachi band is a challenge. Sleeping through a performance by an all-female mariachi band is just plain stupid. That’s why I waited until the members of San Antonio’s Mariachi Las Alteñas were on a break to swoon while I slept.

How’d the SkyRest handle the beauty and talent of Texas’ finest all-female mariachi band? It’s a better sleep aid than a double margarita.

And those mariachis loved sneaking in a nap while taking five!

dogrest

Chasing your tail, sniffing asses and drinking out of the toilet can take a lot out of you. Sometimes you just need to sneak in a nap.

How did the SkyRest handle such a beast? It simply made it a dog day afternoon!

Special thanks to Cody, who is intimately familiar with the SkyRest.

SkyRest Thanksgiving Test

Last modified on 2009-11-30 01:31:34 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

skyrestturkeyday

Lots of people talk about how exhausted the Thanksgiving meal makes them. News programs like to discuss the effects of tryptophan while most people just blame the all the alcohol that they drank to make their relatives more tolerable. I skipped the whole debate and passed out before the meal even started.

How’d the SkyRest handle Turkey Day? Well, I’m thankful for a pillow that wipes clean no matter how much gravy you spill on it.

SkyRest Elmo Test

SkyRestElmo

Where the hell did Elmo come from? He wasn’t on Sesame Street when I was little. Why isn’t Grover more popular? Grover is by far the best resident of Sesame Street. Where’s Grover? Where’s Super Grover?

How’d the SkyRest handle such an annoying sleep companion? Let’s just say that this picture was brought to you by the letters N A and P.

SkyRestPlaneMB1

There’s been a lot of talk about the SkyRest Travel Pillow around these parts. But, before I started testing the pillow in real life scenarios, I took it on a plane to see just how well it handled its natural environment.

Check out my full hands-on review of the SkyRest on Gadling.

How’d the SkyRest handle New York’s most famous street performer? I slept like a (naked) baby.

SkyRest Pool Test

skyrestpool

The hot sun. The calm water. The shepherd’s pie I ate before my swim. They all conspired to knock me out once I stepped in the pool.

How’d the SkyRest perform in this aquatic environment? Swimmingly, of course!

Restaurant Test

No matter how much fun you’re having on a date, pasta and cheese are bound to make you lethargic.

How’d the SkyRest hold up in these delicious conditions? Well, it takes a sexy pillow to ignore a pretty girl.

SkyRestToilet

Hard work can wear a man out. Best to always be prepared in case a nap sneaks up on you.

How’d the SkyRest Travel Pillow handle the perils of the bathroom? Well, it flushed out all those bad thoughts and guaranteed some sweet dreams! Even when things got chaotic by the toilet.

I happen to be a tad obsessed with the SkyRest Travel Pillow. I even tested it on a plane, as it was intended. But what happens when I get tired during other activities?

Planes aren’t the only places made for naps. So, as a public service, I will be testing the SkyRest Travel Pillow in other nap scenarios and letting you know just how useful it is.

First up, the beach! Be it upright or sunning my back, the beach is the perfect place to catch up on some much needed sleep. How’d the SkyRest handle the surf and sand? Well, it handled like a dream, of course!

Follow along as I nap wherever I damn well please. And if you have a suggestions for where I should test the SkyRest, please do let me know.

SkyRest

Today, on a Delta flight from LGA to FLL, I tested the SkyRest Travel Pillow. It was voted the reader favorite in Gadling’s poll of my top SkyMall Monday posts.

Full review will appear on Gadling in the coming weeks.
